About Byzantine Miliaresion
A thin silver coin introduced by Leo III, modeled on the Islamic dirham. Featured a cross and steps with imperial inscriptions. The miliaresion was the first regular Byzantine silver coin since the hexagram. The thin fabric and border of dots distinguish it from earlier Byzantine silver. It circulated alongside gold solidi and copper folles. The miliaresion was minted until the 11th century.
