About Malagasy Ariary
The currency of Madagascar, introduced in 2005 replacing the Malagasy franc at 5 francs to 1 ariary. The ariary is one of only two non decimal currencies in the world, with 1 ariary equal to 5 iraimbilanja. The name derives from precolonial currency. Malagasy banknotes feature the Malagasy people, wildlife including lemurs and baobab trees, and cultural ceremonies. The Central Bank of Madagascar was established in 1973.
