About Spanish Medio
A half real copper coin used in Spain and its colonies. The medio was the smallest silver denomination equivalent, often minted in copper. In Spanish America, the medio was essential for small purchases. The coin featured the Spanish crown and pillars. Millions of medio coins were produced at colonial mints from Mexico to Peru. The medio real was worth about 6 cents in US terms.
