About Moldovan Leu
The leu replaced the Soviet ruble after Moldovan independence. Named after the Romanian leu, reflecting cultural and linguistic ties between Moldova and Romania. The leu is not freely convertible. Moldovan banknotes feature historical monuments and cultural figures including Stephen the Great. The National Bank of Moldova was established in 1991. Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe, affecting the leus stability.
