Marinid Coin
About Marinid Coin
Coins of the Marinid dynasty that succeeded the Almohads in Morocco. The Marinids attempted to recreate Almohad glory in Spain but were defeated at the Battle of Rio Salado in 1340. Marinid coins show continuity with Almohad types but with Marinid names and titles. The square dirham form was maintained. Marinid copper coins are found throughout Morocco and parts of Spain. The Wattasid dynasty continued similar coinage after replacing the Marinids.
