About Maratha Silver Rupee
The silver rupee of the Maratha Empire. Minted at Pune, Satara, and Tanjore. The Maratha rupee maintained the Mughal weight standard but featured Maratha inscriptions. The Shivrai rupee, named after Shivaji, is the most famous. Maratha rupees circulated alongside Mughal and EIC rupees. The Maratha mints produced coins of varying quality. The coins are important evidence of Maratha sovereignty and economic activity during their competition with the British East India Company.
