About Maltese Lira
The currency of Malta until euro adoption in 2008. The Maltese lira was the second highest valued currency unit in the world before replacement. Maltese coins featured the Maltese cross and historical landmarks. The Central Bank of Malta was established in 1968. Malta adopted the euro in 2008 at 0.4293 lira per euro. The Maltese lira replaced the Maltese pound in 1972, which had replaced British colonial currency in 1970.
