Malay Tin Coinage
About Malay Tin Coinage
The Malay sultanates issued tin cash coins modeled on Chinese cash coins but with Arabic inscriptions. Called pitis or wang, these coins were used for local trade in the Malacca Sultanate and successor states. Some featured the sultans name in Jawi script. Tin was abundant in the Malay Peninsula, making it the natural choice for coinage. These tin coins demonstrate the blending of Chinese, Islamic, and indigenous monetary traditions in Southeast Asia.
