About Macedonian Stater
The gold coins of Philip II and Alexander the Great. Philips staters featured Apollo on the obverse and a two horse chariot on the reverse. These coins were minted in enormous quantities from gold mines at Philippi and Pangaeum. Alexanders staters featured Athena and a winged Nike. Over 10 million Alexanders were minted, making them common in hoards from Afghanistan to Britain.
