About Maccabean Coin
Coins of the Hasmonean dynasty founded by the Maccabean revolt. Featured Jewish symbols including the pomegranate, star, and cornucopia. The Hasmonean rulers were the first Jews to mint their own coins after returning from Babylonian exile. The coins bore no images of humans, following the prohibition on graven images. Alexander Jannaeus issued large quantities of prutah coins that are common finds in Israeli archaeology today.
