The gold louis or louis dor was introduced by Louis XIII. Featured the kings bust on the obverse. The double louis was the largest French gold coin. Minted until the French Revolution. The louis dor was Frances answer to the Spanish doubloon and Portuguese moidore. Louis XIV used the coin to project power, with his portrait becoming more regal over his 72 year reign.
