About Canadian Loonie
The one dollar coin of Canada. Features a common loon on the reverse, giving it the nickname loonie. The coin was introduced to replace the dollar bill. The loonie became a symbol of Canadian identity. In 2002, a Canadian Olympic coach buried a loonie at center ice for luck at the Salt Lake City Olympics, where Canada won gold in both mens and womens hockey. The toonie or two dollar coin followed in 1996.
