Sri Lankan Rupee
About Sri Lankan Rupee
Sri Lanka adopted the rupee system in 1872 under British colonial rule, replacing the British pound system. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka was established in 1950. Sri Lankan banknotes feature traditional dancers, farmers, and historical sites. The 2022 economic crisis caused severe depreciation of the rupee. The rupee recovered partially in 2023 after IMF intervention. Sri Lankan coins feature ancient archaeological motifs including stupas and moonstones.
