The large silver 500 lire coin of Italy. Featured a woman planting a tree on the reverse. The 500 lire was the highest denomination silver coin in regular circulation in Italy. Weighing 11 grams of 83.5 percent silver. Over 100 million were minted from 1958 to 1967. The coin was popular but eventually replaced by a smaller 500 lire bimetallic coin in 1982. The original silver 500 lire is worth more than face value for its silver content.
