About Italian 1000 Lire Bimetallic
The Italian 1000 lire bimetallic commemorative series. Italy pioneered bimetallic coinage in Europe with the 500 lire bimetallic in 1982. The 1000 lire commemorative series began in 1997 and ran until 2001 when Italy adopted the euro. Each year featured different historical themes including Christopher Columbus, Maria Montessori, and Giuseppe Verdi. The coins were popular with collectors but did not circulate widely. Italy has a long tradition of beautiful coin design.
