About Italian Lira
Established after Italian unification. Based on the French franc system. The lira suffered chronic inflation throughout the 20th century. Before World War I, the lira was stronger than the dollar. By the 1990s, a coffee cost 1,500 lire. The lira was forced out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992 but managed to requalify for the euro. Replaced at 1,936.27 lire per euro in 2002.
