About Dutch Lion Dollar
The leeuwendaalder, a silver coin featuring a lion. First minted for the Dutch Revolt against Spain. The lion dollar circulated widely in the Middle East and the American colonies. The English word dollar comes from the German thaler through the Dutch daalder. Lion dollars were accepted in New Amsterdam, and examples are found in American colonial archaeological sites. Over 400 different varieties exist.
