About Liberian Dollar
The currency of Liberia, founded by freed American slaves. The first Liberian coins were copper cents featuring Liberty, modeled on US coinage. Liberia used US dollars alongside its own currency for over a century. The Liberian dollar was pegged to the US dollar. Civil war and economic crisis caused severe devaluation. Liberia now uses a dual currency system with both Liberian and US dollars circulating.
