About Romanian Leu
The leu means lion in Romanian, named after the Dutch thaler called the leeuwendaalder that circulated widely in the Ottoman Empire. Romania adopted the leu in 1867 after independence from the Ottomans. Suffered severe hyperinflation in the 1990s after the fall of communism. Redenominated in 2005 at 10,000 to 1. Romania is one of the few EU members that has not yet adopted the euro.
