About US Legal Tender Note
Also called United States Notes or greenbacks. The first general circulation paper currency issued by the federal government. The 1862 series featured Lincoln secretary Chase. Not backed by gold or silver, these notes lost value during the Civil War. After the war, the government attempted to withdraw them, causing the Panic of 1873. Legal tender notes remained in circulation until 1971 when they were finally retired.
