Lebanese Pound
About Lebanese Pound
The Lebanese pound was pegged to the US dollar at 1,507 to 1 from 1997 until the 2019 financial crisis. The peg collapse caused the pound to lose over 98 percent of its value on the black market. The Banque du Liban was established in 1963. Before the civil war, Lebanon was the financial center of the Middle East. The currency collapse since 2019 has caused widespread poverty and emigration. Banknotes feature cedar trees and Lebanese historical sites.
