Latin Empire Coinage
About Latin Empire Coinage
Coins minted by the Latin Empire established after the Fourth Crusade captured Constantinople in 1204. The Latin emperors issued debased gold and silver coins imitating Byzantine types. The coins reflect the cultural displacement of Byzantine rulers by Western European knights. The Latin Empire lasted until 1261 when the Byzantines recaptured the city. Latin Empire coins are scarce and historically important as artifacts of the Crusader occupation.
