About Korean Won
The won replaced the hwan in 1962. South Koreas economic miracle saw the won strengthen from over 1,000 per dollar in the 1960s to about 1,300 today. The won is a freely floating currency. South Korean banknotes feature portraits of Confucian scholars and the fictional character yi hwang. North Korea has a separate won that is not convertible. The Bank of Korea was established in 1950.
