About South African Krugerrand
The first modern bullion coin, introduced in 1967. Contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. Features Paul Kruger on the obverse and a springbok antelope on the reverse. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Krugerrand accounted for 90 percent of the global gold coin market. Apartheid sanctions in the 1980s led to the development of competitors like the Maple Leaf and Eagle. Over 60 million have been minted.
