About Kennedy Half Dollar
Created just months after the assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963. The design was based on his presidential medal. The 1964 half dollar is 90 percent silver. From 1965 to 1970, the coin was 40 percent silver. Since 1971, it contains no silver. The Kennedy half dollar never circulated widely as the public hoarded them as souvenirs. The 1964 is the only year with 90 percent silver.
