About Islamic Dinar
First issued by Caliph Abd al-Malik in his coinage reform of 696 AD. Featured no images, only Quranic inscriptions, breaking from Byzantine and Sasanian traditions. The standard weight was 4.25 grams of pure gold, based on the Byzantine solidus. The dinar became the dominant gold coin of the medieval Mediterranean and Islamic world. The word dinar survives in modern currencies of Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Serbia, and Tunisia.
