Irish Pound
About Irish Pound
Also called the punt in the Irish language. Introduced after Irish independence, replacing the pound sterling at par. The Irish pound diverged from sterling in 1979 when Ireland joined the European Monetary System. The Irish pound was the first currency to adopt the euro convergence criteria rigorously. Ireland adopted the euro in 2002 at 0.787564 pounds per euro. The Central Bank of Ireland had one of the tightest monetary policies in Europe.
