About Indian Head Penny
Featured Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, not an actual Native American. Designed by James Barton Longacre. Minted from 1859 to 1909. The 1877 Indian Head cent is the key date of the series. The coin was 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, giving it a distinctive whitish color. Replaced by the Lincoln cent in 1909 on the 100th anniversary of Lincolns birth.
