About Israeli Shekel
The modern shekel was introduced in 1985, replacing the hyperinflated old shekel at 1,000 to 1. The shekel has biblical roots, as the ancient shekel was a unit of weight and coin in Judea. The Israeli new shekel is one of the strongest currencies in the Middle East. Israeli banknotes feature portraits of prominent figures in Hebrew literature and poetry. The Bank of Israel was established in 1954.
