About Indonesian Rupiah
One of the least valued currencies in the world. Introduced during the Indonesian independence struggle against Dutch rule. The rupiah replaced the Dutch East Indies gulden. Devastated by the 1997 Asian financial crisis, losing 80 percent of its value. The rupiah has never fully recovered. Indonesian banknotes feature national heroes and cultural symbols. The 100,000 rupiah note is the highest denomination.
