The large silver 5 franc coin featuring Hercules between two allegorical female figures representing Equality and Liberty. Designed by Augustin Dupre. The Hercules design was used from the Revolution through the Second Republic and Second Empire. The coin weighs 25 grams of 90 percent silver. The Hercules type was revived in the 1960s for circulating commemorative 5 franc and 10 franc coins. The design symbolizes the revolutionary ideals of the French Republic.
