Hard Times Token
About Hard Times Token
Tokens issued during the economic depression of 1837 to 1844. When President Andrew Jackson killed the Second Bank of the United States, the economy collapsed. Copper coins disappeared from circulation. Private tokens filled the gap. Many featured political slogans criticizing Jackson or his successor Van Buren. The token bearing the inscription I Take Responsibility was a satirical reference to Van Burens economic policies. Over 200 varieties are known.
