About US Half Union
A proposed fifty dollar gold coin pattern. Two patterns were struck at the Philadelphia mint in 1877. The design was based on the twenty dollar double eagle but larger. The Half Union was never adopted due to concerns about the practicality of such a large gold coin. The two original patterns are in the Smithsonian Institution. The Half Union represents the peak of large denomination US coinage proposals.
