The five dollar gold half eagle was authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792. The Turban Head half eagle of 1795 was the first US gold coin. The 1815 half eagle is the rarest regular issue with only 635 minted. The Liberty Head half eagle was minted from 1839 to 1908. The Indian Head half eagle of 1908 to 1929 features an incuse design struck below the surface, controversial at the time. Over 100 million half eagles were minted across all types.
