About US Half Dime
The predecessor to the nickel five cent piece. A small silver coin worth five cents. The Flowing Hair half dime of 1794 is extremely rare. The Lewis and Clark expedition carried half dimes. The last half dimes were minted in 1873. The term half dime appears in the novels of Charles Dickens and other 19th century literature. Replaced by the copper-nickel five cent piece in 1866.
