About English Groat
Worth four pence. Introduced by Edward I in 1279. Featured the king on a throne. The groat was the first English coin to bear a rhyming legend. The Edward III groat is the most common medieval English silver coin found by metal detectorists. The groat was minted until 1856, though after 1660 it was machine made. The last groats were produced for British Guiana in the 19th century.
