About Greek Stater
A generic term for the standard coin of a Greek city-state. The stater could be gold, silver, or electrum depending on the city. The Corinthian stater featured Pegasus. The Theban stater featured a Boeotian shield. The Sikyonian stater featured a dove. Each citys coin design reflected its patron deity and local identity. Greek staters are masterpieces of miniature art.
