About Greek Drachma
The basic silver coin of ancient Greece. Originally a handful of iron spits called oboloi. Six obols made one drachma, meaning a handful. The drachma was the daily wage of a laborer, a juror, or a hoplite. Each Greek city minted its own drachms with distinctive designs. The Athenian drachma featured Athena and her owl. The Corinthian drachma showed Pegasus. Replaced by the modern drachma in 1832.
