Haitian Gourde
About Haitian Gourde
The currency of Haiti since 1813, making it one of the oldest currencies in the Americas. Replaced the French colonial livre. Haiti was the first country to permanently abolish slavery, and the gourde symbolized economic independence. The gourde has been redenominated twice. The current gourde dates from 1872. Haitian banknotes feature heroes of the revolution including Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. The gourde is one of the least valued currencies in the Americas.
