About US Goloid Metric Dollar
A pattern dollar coin made of goloid, an alloy of silver, gold, and copper. Proposed by Dr. William Wheeler Hubbell. The idea was to create a coin whose value came from the combined metal content. The metric dollar weighed 25 grams. Only about a dozen were minted. The goloid experiment was rejected as impractical. The coins are extremely rare. The concept was ahead of its time in thinking about commodity backed currency.
