About Gobrecht Dollar
Designed by Christian Gobrecht as a pattern coin to replace the Spanish dollars still circulating. Featured Seated Liberty on the obverse and a flying eagle on the reverse. The flying eagle design was praised for its artistry. Only about 1,000 Gobrecht dollars were struck from 1836 to 1839. They were not intended for circulation but patterns for the new silver dollar series.
