About Fugio Cent Detail
See Fugio Cent entry. Designed by Benjamin Franklin. The reverse showed 13 linked rings, a design later used on the first US coins. The Fugio cents were struck by James Jarvis under a contract with the Continental Congress. Jarvis bribed a Congressman to secure the contract, creating a scandal. Over 400,000 Fugio cents were struck. There are over 50 die varieties. The coins were lost for decades and rediscovered in bank vaults in the 1800s.
