About Prussian Friedrichsdor
The standard gold coin of Prussia under Frederick the Great. Worth 5 talers. Featured the bust of the Prussian king. The friedrichsdor helped finance the Prussian military machine that dominated 18th century Europe. Contained about 6.05 grams of gold. Frederick minted these coins to standardize Prussian currency and reduce dependence on foreign coins. Discontinued after the unification of Germany in 1871.
