About US Four Dollar Gold
See US Stella entry. The four dollar Stella was proposed to align with the Latin Monetary Union. Two designs exist: Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair. The Coiled Hair Stellas are extremely rare, with only about 10 to 17 known of each date. The Flowing Hair 1879 is more available with about 400 struck. Many Stellas show mounting marks from being worn as jewelry. Despite being patterns, Stellas are collected as part of the US gold series.
