About US Flying Eagle Cent
The first small cent, replacing the large copper cent. Featured an eagle in flight on the obverse. Designed by James B. Longacre. Pattern coins dated 1856 were made for congressmen and officials, and are very valuable. Regular production ran from 1857 to 1858. The copper-nickel alloy gave the coin a whitish appearance. The 1858 small letters variant is scarcer than large letters.
