About UK Five Pence

The decimal five pence replaced the shilling. The original large 5p was reduced in size in 1990. Featured a crowned thistle on the reverse initially, later the royal shield. Over 3 billion have been minted. The small 5p is similar in size to the old sixpence. The 5p and 10p are the most commonly encountered British decimal coins. The transition from large to small sizes saved the Royal Mint millions in metal costs.
