About Fatimid Coin
Coins of the Fatimid Caliphate, the Shia rival to the Abbasid caliphs. Fatimid gold dinars were renowned for their purity and circulated widely in Mediterranean trade. The Fatimids ruled from Cairo, which they founded in 969. Fatimid coins featured Shia formulas distinguishing them from Sunni Abbasid issues. The Al-Mustansir gold dinars are among the finest Islamic gold coins. Fatimid silver dirhams show Persian and Berber influences.
