About Islamic Fals
The copper coin of everyday commerce in the early Islamic world. Unlike gold dinars and silver dirhams, the fals was not standardized in weight. Each city or region produced its own fals with local designs. Many early fals retained pre-Islamic imagery adapted with Arabic inscriptions. The fals demonstrates the transition from Byzantine and Sasanian coinage to a distinctive Islamic monetary system. Thousands of varieties exist.
