About Portuguese Escudo
Replaced the real after the Republican revolution of 1910. The escudo was initially strong but suffered during the World Wars and Salazars authoritarian regime. The Portuguese escudo was redenominated in 1929. Portugal was one of the poorest countries in Western Europe until joining the EU in 1986. Replaced by the euro in 2002 at 200.482 escudos per euro.
