About Spanish Escudo
The escudo was both a gold and copper coin denomination in Spain and its colonies. The gold escudo was worth 16 reales. The silver escudo was less common. Spanish colonial escudos were minted in Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Chile. The 8 escudos gold coin was equivalent to the doubloon. The escudo remained the currency of Spain until 1868 when the peseta was introduced.
